📜 Why “of the English”?

In the 18th century, English aristocrats began wintering in Nice to enjoy its mild climate. In 1820, following a particularly harsh winter, many beggars flocked to the city. The English Reverend Lewis Way decided to fund a charity project: the construction of a small dirt path along the seafront. What was once a 2-meter wide track evolved over decades into the prestigious boulevard we know today.
