🏰 Castle Hill: The Most Beautiful Balcony Over the Mediterranean

This is where Nice was born. Castle Hill (Colline du Château) is the highest point of the historic center, offering a breathtaking 360° panorama. A true green lung for the city, this 19-hectare park separates Old Nice from Port Lympia. Whether you are a history buff, a photographer seeking the perfect shot, or simply looking for some shade, the hill is an essential stop.

📜 A Castle… that you will never see!

Don’t look for dungeons or drawbridges: nothing remains. Why? Because in 1706, the troops of King Louis XIV besieged the city and completely leveled the fortress, which was deemed impregnable, to punish the resistance of the people of Nice. What was once a formidable military citadel became, in the 19th century, a pleasure garden thanks to the city’s desire to create a promenade area for European aristocracy.

📸 Highlights Not to be Missed

  • 🌊 The Great Waterfall: This monumental waterfall is artificial, built in the 19th century on the old walls of the citadel. It is the coolest spot on the hill and a must-visit photo location.
  • 🖼️ Bay of Angels Panorama: From the main platform, you will get the iconic view of the Promenade des Anglais and the red rooftops of Old Nice.
  • 🚢 Port Panorama: On the other side of the hill, admire the ballet of ferries and yachts in Port Lympia, with the Mercantour mountains in the background.
  • 🧩 The Mosaics: As you walk, look for the beautiful floor mosaics illustrating Homer’s Odyssey.

🚶 How to Get to the Top?

There are three ways to access the park, depending on your energy levels:

  • 🛗 The Elevator (The easiest way): Located at the end of Quai des États-Unis (under the Bellanda Tower). It is free and drops you right into the heart of the park.
  • 👟 The Stairs (The sportiest way): From Old Nice (Montée Lesage), climb the steps to enjoy progressive viewpoints. Allow about 10 to 15 minutes.
  • 🚂 The Little Train: A fun option that tours the city and stops for 10 minutes at the summit.
